  3. The following steps detail how to erect wooden fence 
  4. posts using socket plates:

  20. Step 1 - Choosing the correct materials
  21. It is important to make sure that the post and bolt-down 
  22. socket plate are of the same dimensions. You can trim the 
  23. post to fit the footings but this will weaken the fence. 
  24. Normally the post should be about 50mm higher than the 
  25. panel unless you are adding a trellis. The posts will 
  26. remain above the ground, which will help to reduce rotting.

  28. Step 2 - Preparing the post to fit the wall
  29. If it is possible fix the first post to a wall to give extra 
  30. support. The fence post may need cutting to fit. If you do 
  31. this you will need to soak the sawn part overnight in wood 
  32. preservative, leaving the post for at least 24 hours to 
  33. allow it to dry.

  35. Step 3 - Drilling holes in the post and the wall
  36. To attach posts over 1.2m tall you will need three expansion 
  37. bolts. Hold the post against the wall and mark the positions 
  38. for the holes so the bolts will be attached to brick. 
  39. Drill the holes in the post and then make further holes for 
  40. the nuts which are usually 13mm. Mark the wall with a long 
  41. nail and using a masonry bit, drill the holes for the bolts 
  42. at an appropriate diameter and depth.

  44. Step 4 - Attaching the post to the wall
  45. Remove the nuts and washers from the bolts and inset them 
  46. into the wall. You can now hang the post to the wall. 
  47. Re-attach the nuts and washers and tighten using a 
  48. socket spanner as shown.

  50. Step 5 - Drilling holes in a patio or in concrete
  51. If you are drilling into a patio ensure that it has 
  52. proper foundations. If in doubt lay a concrete slab to 
  53. take the weight of the fence. To find out how to do this 
  54. click the icon below. Use the correct width masonry bit 
  55. and drill the holes for the bolts. Tighten the bolts in 
  56. the same manner as before.

  58. Step 6 - Attaching the screws 
  59. Some post socket plates have screws at the bottom to 
  60. tighten the post into position.
